April Showers
Let's hope they pull through on their promises for May.
What I'm Writing:
So, so much, but nothing to share yet.
What I'm Reading:
I must confess to being a little melancholy that the people-driven protests that brought down the homophobic laws in Indiana and Arkansas haven't extended to the anti-reproductive freedom laws sweeping the states. This column by the great Katha Pollitt explains why people view those two issues differently. This essay on Flatbush and mothers from Edwidge Danticat. Writers' favorite streets. The problem with police departments is that we expect the criminal justice system to solve all of our problems. It's time to stop fighting the use of "they" as a third-person singular non-gendered pronoun. A ho-hum political season? Oliver Sacks on his cancer. Maybe I overuse semicolons.
Bonus Book I'm Reading:
Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel, who I generally like. Inspired by a replay I caught of this Fresh Air episode which was, in turn, inspired by the new PBS series which, I'm going to confess, bores me a little. I find the book much more lively and engaging.
What I'm Adding to My To-Read List:
The English aristocracy was very weird.
What I'm Recommending:
Virginia wines (even sweet ones), weekends at vineyard cottages, and great dinners, all paid for by someone else.
Cute Animal Pic of the Week:
This was a tough one, because I've collected a ton of cute animal pictures this week. But we're going with Milo and Daisy telling me goodbye. A friend said, "Wow, those two really bring the hangdog face to a new level."
