Autumn is the best season
I try not to read stories about sexism and get angry any more. I still care, and women's rights are really important to be, but the never-ending cycle of news about how hard it is for women makes me angry and depressed. And then, sometimes, some terrible story pops into my newsfeed anyway. There was lots of it this week—the gender pay gap closed a whole penny!—and Emma Watson gave a speech to the United Nations about feminism. (She is the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.)
Of course, what happened after the speech? Hackers threatened to release nude photos of Emma Watson. To paraphrase a friend, they clearly had no idea the wrath they would face if they messed with Hermione. An entire generation of planet dwellers grew up with her. Then it was uncovered as a hoax. Ha ha, funny joke! For the record, it's not funny when any kind of threat, real or not, surfaces after a woman addresses the UN about gender inequality.
(As a side note, I had been wondering why so many celebrities seem to have nude photos of themselves. Sex tapes, too. Can't they just refer people to their movies? But then someone pointed out that they tend to be in long distance relationships because they're shooting most of the year. I guess that makes more sense.)
Anyway, rant over:
What I'm Writing:
Not much you can read yet. Except for this short front-of-the-book piece for New York magazine about two of Michael Vick's surviving dogs. Also, I semi-regularly update my person blog. Stay tuned for more.
What I'm Reading:
You really should watch the Emma Watson speech. The last Mitford sister died. Here is another great story about a woman from another era. Here is a woman who lost herself. And a woman who marched for the climate on Sunday. And a woman who doesn't want to be a woman. You may have sensed a theme.
What I'm Listening To:
The Fiona Apple station on Pandora so many times I actually finished the station.
What I Can't Wait to Listen To:
Serial.
What I'm Recommending:
A wine club that delivers to your door. Sustainably produced and pretty delicious. They didn't give me any money to recommend that, I just really like it. If you click on the link above you'll get a discount and I'll get a referral credit, but watch out they don't deliver in some states. Also, in general, I recommend wine.
Cute Animal Pic of the Week:
It's a baby elephant rescued and flying on a plane. You can read about what happened here, but it's really sad.
