Happy Supreme Court Decision Day!
However you feel about the issues at hand, the days during which the Supreme Court hands down decisions on its biggest cases are exciting ones in Washington. People talk about the rulings in bars, on the Metro, and at work. This year, they upheld Obamacare, ruled against housing discrimination, and, of course, recognized marriage equality. Which is to say, they determined the future course of the country in two days, and probably made June 26 an unofficial (official?) national holiday. So, well done, America.
What I'm Writing:
On the very weird story that was Rachel Dolezal, and in memoriam of the Mother Emanuel Bible study group and the loss of nine people who comprised it.
What I'm Reading:
It is the duty of every American to read the following things: Chief Justice John Roberts's opinion on the Affordable Care Act and Justice Antonin Scalia's dissent; Justice Anthony Kennedy's opinion in the marriage quality case and Scalia's dissent.
Once the marriage equality decision came down, many who opposed it took to Twitter to proclaim they were moving to Canada. They will be disappointed when they get there. CliffNotes version: Scalia's dissent in the Obamacare decision had some memorable lines. Here is a gentle reminder that being part of a married couple is not the only way to have a fulfilling, adult life. Jelani Cobb, Ta-nehisi Coates, and Joel Anderson from Charleston. President Obama's eulogy for the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, happening right now. This is a crazy story. A must read on the families who negotiated with ISIS.
What I'm Watching:
A fascinating and well-done little documentary about a woman raised in a Jewish family in upstate New York and, well, you'll see.
Cute Animal Pic of the Week:
I did laundry. I started folding it. I left it piled on the couch, and walked away. This is what I saw when I returned.
