Some Fridays are the worst days
Yesterday was an annoying mix of busy and terrible. Because of some unidentified tear in the fabric of the universe, I did not have coffee until almost 5 p.m. Some days are like that. Speaking of which, I hope everyone's managed to avoid this travesty. Some books are meant to be left alone. At any rate, I apologize for sending this out late.
What I'm Writing:
I wrote about the gender pay gap for The Daily Beast. Then I went on a radio show for an "interview" about it that turned out to be a debate. No one wants to believe women are discriminated against. I think the trick with the pay gap is that if you look at any individual woman, you can find alternative reasons she might be getting paid less. It's not until the end of a career, a Lilly Ledbetter situation, when you can look back over the whole course of a life at work and spot exactly the ways sexism came into play. I think men have a responsibility to worry about pay equity. I know people think it's rude to talk about money, but men, please tell your female coworkers how much you're making.
What I'm Reading:
Only one thing: Command and Control. I've been meaning to for ages, and I snagged a review copy for free from my last job. Fun fact: it is about an almost nuclear accident that happened not 20 miles south of my hometown in the fall of 1980, and my dance teacher's husband, our local radio station chief, is in the book throughout. Sadly, when my mom first told me all this happened (I was not quite age 1 when it occurred), I did not believe her. This book could have been mine!
What I'm Watching:
I'm into this British actor named Shaun Evans. Mark my word, next Benedict Cumberbatch. The two were in a quiet, depressing movie together called Wreckers I liked, and which you can watch for free if you have Amazon Prime. Evans is also the star of a prequel series about a beloved British television character named Inspector Morse. It's called Endeavour, it's also on Amazon Prime, and I LOVE it. Speaking of Cumberbatch, I might love Endeavor more than I like Steven Moffat's Sherlock.
What Else I'm Watching, Though I Shouldn't Have All This Free Time:
Frasier. On Netflix.
What I'm Recommending:
Get a Roku and get rid of your cable of satellite service. It makes everything better.
Cute Animal Pic of the Week:
Sampson Chester "The Spider Killer" Bunting, a.k.a. Little Buddy, really enjoyed interrupting me helping me while I made this newsletter. He hopes you like it.
